Single Trip Vs. Multi Trip Travel Insurance: What’s Best For You

Who doesn’t love travelling? The thought of seeing new places, exploring new cultures and tasting local cuisines is both fascinating and mesmerizing. Now, what is the one thing that many of us generally tend to push aside until the last moment? Travel insurance?? For those of you who do not know what  travel insurance is, well, it is an insurance product designed to cover the costs associated with unexpected events you might face while travelling like loss of baggage, flight cancellation, accidents, etc. Travel insurance is a must-have insurance product regardless of the kind of trip you’re taking. Whether you are taking a business trip or leisure trip, don't take the risk of travelling without being adequately insured.

Travel insurance can be availed two ways – single trip insurance policy and multi-trip insurance policy.

Single trip travel insurance

Travelling abroad for a workshop, event or to enjoy your holiday? In this case, it is wise to go for a single trip travel insurance plan. You will be covered from the time you take your flight from India to a foreign destination until the date of your return or the day that your policy term ends (whichever is earlier). Such policies generally cover you for hospitalization expense, emergency dental treatment costs, loss of checked-in luggage, etc.

Single trip travel insurance plans are cost effective for people who do not travel often. You wouldn’t have to pay for the days you aren’t travelling. However, if you think you might have to travel overseas  a couple of times in a year then it is advisable to go for a multi- trip plan since you wouldn't have to take a new cover every time you travel.

Multi-trip travel insurance

Multi-trip travel insurance plans are generally purchased for a span of one year. The policy term, which will be in force for a period of 12 months, will begin from the date at which you buy it. All the trips you make during the year will be covered under the same policy. Multi-trip travel insurance policies generally cover loss of passport, emergency medical expenses, trip cancelation, etc.

If you’re someone who goes on multiple official trips in a year or simply likes to visit different countries on a regular basis then a multi-trip travel insurance plan is the best option for you. The plus point of such plans for frequent fliers is that they do not have to waste time going through any last-minute purchasing hassles. It must be noted that multi-trip plans will have a limit on the duration of travel, so make sure to read the policy documents before buying any cover.

Bottom line

Both the travel insurance plans have different uses and so there really isn’t a way to say which is the better option. If you are looking for the ideal travel insurance plan, begin by first identifying what your requirements are. Go for a multi-trip policy if you think you are likely to take more than two trips a year. In case you have to postpone the trip, your insurance cover will still be in force. If you're not a frequent traveler, shop for single trip policies since they will be cost effective.
