From cooking, cleaning, washing, helping with the kids, and much more, our domestic helps (maids, cooks, bais, servants) do so much that they are an integral part of the urban Indian family. It is almost impossible for an Indian family to run the home smoothly without the helping hand of at least one domestic help. In some cases, several generations of a family are served by several generations of the domestic help’s family.
Readers might also be aware that these women typically have husbands who indulge in drinking and contribute very little to household expenses. Domestic helps are therefore forced to run the home with their meager salaries and see to their children’s education, food for the family, and other household expenses alone. They live a hand-to-mouth existence.
Imagine if, in such a scenario, your maid is the victim of an accident and is disabled or expires. Her family, which has barely been making ends meet, would fall into the pit of poverty and never rise again if their primary breadwinner no longer brings in the monthly salary.
This Diwali, let’s gift our domestic help/s a responsible and mature bakshish (gift). Let’s give their family financial protection in the worst-case scenario; that is, if your domestic help becomes disabled or dies. Let’s enroll them for two Government-backed insurance schemes named Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY).
The premiums will cost just INR 342 per year for an insurance cover of INR 2 lakhs in case of death or disability. Let's pay the annual premiums for them every Diwali. This will not only secure their families financially but will also set a great precedent that others will follow.
Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana
Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) is a Government-backed scheme that provides a life cover of INR 2,00,000 for an annual premium of INR 330 for death resulting from any event. The plan has to be renewed every year to continue staying protected under it. The plan can be bought through Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).
Any individual falling within the age bracket of 18 to 50 years with a savings bank account can enroll
To ensure maximum people benefit from this scheme, the enrolment process has been kept very simple. Download the form from the web, fill it, and submit it to your household help’s banker. Some banks, like ICICI, have made it even easier and let you initiate the process through SMS or using the Net Banking facility.
Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana
Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) is another Government-backed risk cover scheme that provides financial protection for death caused due to accidents as well as partial and total disability caused due to accidents. At an annual premium of just INR 12, the insured individual is covered for INR 2,00,000 for accidental death and total disability. For partial disability, the scheme provides a cover of INR 1,00,000. The maximum age of maturity under this plan is 70 years.
In order to be eligible to sign up for this plan, the policy seeker must fall within the age bracket of 18 to 70 years, should have a bank account, and give their auto-debit consent. They must also furnish their Aadhaar Card as a KYC document. The plan can be availed through a number of insurance companies, such as Bajaj Allianz, ICICI Lombard, United India Insurance, and New India Assurance, among others. Here again, the process can be initiated through SMS or using the Net Banking facility. Alternatively, the concerned insurance company can be approached to initiate the process.
These two are the most cost-effective life insurance plans that are specially designed to financially secure the lives of the economically underprivileged section of society.
This Diwali, do your bit to bring more smiles and light more lamps. Do something meaningful to help out your domestic help/s.
