Yes, in March 2006, Pradhan Mantri Medical Insurance Scheme was launched as Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).  The scheme was launched with the objective of providing affordable medical facilities to various parts of the country, especially rural India.

The scheme was launched -

• As a measure to correct the imbalance in the accessibility of the health services for different sections of the society.
• It also aims at bettering the medical education across the nation for improved facilities in the sector.

The entire scheme is divided into 2 components -

1. To set up institutions like aiims
   They have been set up in states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Orissa.
2. To upgrade government backed medical college institutions
