Am I Required to Link My Aadhaar Card to My Insurance Policies? Supreme Court’s Latest Judgement

The 12-digit unique identification number, or Aadhaar Card, which is the world’s largest biometric ID system, has become an important aspect of an Indian’s life because till lately it was required to be linked with several personal identity and financial holdings; for example, mobile number, PAN, bank accounts, for ITR filing, and to avail government subsidies and welfare schemes.

Why is linking Aadhaar number important?

Linking one’s Aadhaar number helps the government prevent fraudulent transactions, curb money laundering and tax leakages, and weed out fake beneficiaries of government schemes.

While it is still mandatory to link your Aadhaar number for certain services, according to the Sept 2018 judgment, the Supreme Court maintained that it is not mandatory to link your Aadhaar number to open a bank account, get a mobile number, or obtain admission at a school. It is also not mandatory to link your Aadhaar number to insurance policies, as of now.

Since private insurers are yet to receive any guidance from the insurance regulator IRDAI on the Supreme Court’s Aadhaar ruling, top insurance players have taken a call to stop making Aadhaar card submission mandatory for new policies.

This means that until further notice from IRDAI, linking of Aadhaar to insurance policies is not mandatory.
