Just when I thought insurance is a boring industry, I stumbled upon some interesting case studies. These case studies comprise of some bizarre and some funny insurance claim stories. And I thought why should I alone have a good laugh? So, here are the 7 best insurance claim stories in a descending order up until my personal favourite on spot 1. Go ahead and indulge in a laughter ride.

7. Vacation turned into a nightmare

A couple on their vacation in Malaysia had a hard time when a troop of thieving monkeys stole their clothes and scattered them around in a forest after destroying them completely (our sincere condolences to the couple). But thanks to their insurance company that reimbursed them for the loss.

6. Slip-and-fall

Apparently, there was an old woman is the U.S. who fell in at least twenty different stores. Guess why? So that she can claim insurance money. And she did get reimbursements from her insurers. But do you think she got away with it? Of course not! After several falls, her insurers became alert and proved in the court that she faked her falls. Consequently, the con woman was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment along with other charges that she had to bear.

5. Present inside the Birthday Cake?

A mother in North Carolina got so excited (and also a little absent-minded) on her daughter’s birthday that she unknowingly (or knowingly? We would never know) put her Nokia phone in the cake. Just when her daughter would have thought that she got a new phone on her birthday, her dream got shattered along with her mother because there was neither a new phone (for the daughter) nor the insurance company reimbursed the loss (to the mother).

4. What? There was a mouse in her soup?

A woman in Virginia claimed an insurance settlement from the popular restaurant Cracker Barrel. Why? Because she found a mouse in her soup that she ordered from the restaurant in question. That’s horrible. No, wait. The story doesn’t end here. On closer inspection by the restaurateur, it was discovered that there was nothing wrong with the soup initially and hence it was suspected (and proved in the court) that it was a conspiracy weaved by the woman to claim insurance money. She was sentenced to one year imprisonment.

3. iPhone in the rear end of a cow

This one is funny. A farmer in the UK lost his iPhone in the rear end of one of the cows in his farm. Before you jump to assume that he had some weird fantasies, allow us to elaborate on the story. So, it was a stormy night and the farmer (all sympathies with him) went out on the field in the middle of the night to help his cow with calving. Since it was very dark, he used his phone’s torch and that’s how the tragedy happened. Although the phone was later found from there, it failed to function properly. And yes, the insurance company did pay him the compensation.

2. Where did the diamond go??

A woman in Texas was lucky to have a diamond ring until it was swallowed by her goose. Obsessed to get back her diamond ring, she even went to the extent of sifting the goose’s poop for several weeks (Eww!). She tried but to no avail. Finally, she filed a claim but her insurer suggested dissecting the goose. However, before she could do that, the goose flew away. Poor lady, her claim was rejected anyway.

1. Nothing can beat a clever lawyer

This one is the best, I swear! A lawyer, goes to a shop, buys a pack of cigars and insures them against all kinds of calamities including fire. Later, he files a claim because his cigars got destroyed in a chain of multiple tiny fires. In the court, the judge gives verdict in his favour. What a trickster, right?

But the story doesn’t end here. If the lawyer was clever, the insurer was cleverer. Once the verdict was given and the lawyer reimbursed, the insurance company had him arrested on the charges of arson. He was imprisoned and fined. This is certainly a good example of getting the taste of one’s own medicine.

And that’s it! Which claim story was your favourite? Also, if you have more such stories to share, let us know in the comment section below.
