Ho ho ho! Christmas is almost here.

This is a wonderful time to exhibit your festive spirit for all to see. Decorating the Christmas tree, exchanging presents, putting a wreath on the front door and cooking a hearty Christmas meal are some of the things we can all look forward to this season. However, in the hustle and bustle, it is essential you stay vigilant as just a small safety hazard could turn your holiday celebration into a downright disaster. To prevent any unfortunate event from ruining your Christmas celebrations, keep these five points in mind:

1) Protect your valuables

Chances are you haven’t unwrapped your Christmas presents yet. But if there is something expensive inside, wouldn’t you want to ensure it doesn’t end up in the wrong hands? While Christmas is the season of joy, unfortunately it is also the time when the risk of burglary is high. So if you’ve got a sparkling diamond, play station, or any other expensive item, think about getting it insured. Contents insurance policy covers you for damages or loss of your household possessions from events like fire, storms, floods and theft.

2) Activate your alarm system

To avoid falling victim to a possible break-in, tighten the security of your home by installing and activating your alarm system. Sometimes intruders can be deterred from attempting to enter your home just by seeing the alarm. Think about all the expensive Christmas presents that you may have lying around in your house. You wouldn’t want to be robbed of them now, would you? It is also recommended that you set in place surveillance cameras inside and outside your home and tightly lock all your windows and doors when you’re away.

3) Examine toys before buying them

When you’re shopping for toys this Christmas, take time to ensure there aren’t any detachable small parts that your little ones could easily lodge into their throat, nose or ears. Check the toys to see if there aren’t any sharp edges or small holes where your kids could get their fingers trapped. Also, it is advisable to buy toys from retailers that are trustworthy. Avoid buying gift presents from the streets as they could be duplicates or could get easily damaged.

4) Don’t overload electrical outlets

Your electrical outlets can only handle a certain amount of wattage. If you overload the power sockets, there is a risk it could overheat and catch fire. Spread the Christmas lights across different outlets to ease the load. Before you plug in the lights, check to make sure they aren’t damaged. It is also a good idea to install smoke alarms in each of the rooms and keep a fire extinguisher in handy.

5) Cover getaways with travel insurance

Flight fares tend to shoot up towards the end of Christmas as many have holidays. To save a couple of bucks, many unfortunately make the mistake of skimping on travel insurance, which, needless to say is a big mistake. Premiums are a very small price to pay for financially securing your whole trip. With a travel insurance cover, you’ll be covered for emergency evacuation, lost or stolen luggage, medical emergencies abroad, etc.
